You ain't seen nothin' yet - AND be careful: Raymond Merriman's preview for 10/10/11 week & beyond

Whew, Raymond Merriman's time windows around 9/26 and 9/29 (plus or minus 3 trading days) were powerful. But what about a double-bottom potential? And what's in store for the rest of the year, and into 2012? Let's see what Ray's sharing about his perception of what's in store for us economically, and beyond. Ray's preview comments are in addition to his more detailed subscription services mentioned in his announcements section and at his website. He also analyzes other countries' markets, economy, the political climate, bonds, currencies and commodities. He also offers detailed paid subscription services (daily, weekly and monthly available, at his website always at the right side of the page here). Here are Ray's comments for the upcoming week, from his site at Merriman Market Analyst - MMA Cycles Weekly Preview Comments:

Review and Preview

Once again the stock markets of the world went just about perfect for the script laid out in last week's "Short-Term Geocosmics" section. Equity markets started off ugly last week as expected. By Tuesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down to the 10,400 area, well below its low of August 9 (10,604) and September 22 (10,597). The S&P and NASDAQ were also busting down to new yearly lows, as were the stock indices in Hong Kong, and Argentina. But then something happened late in the trading session on Tuesday. The DJIA suddenly reversed up 400 points. News reports first said it was a short-covering rally. No doubt. But there was more to it than meets the eye. Well, actually it does meet the eye, but most eyes don't look up that high. As stated in last week's column, "… the (new) week is unlikely to start out very calm, given the way the U.S. stock markets sold off into the close, and more so given that Mars will form a square Jupiter at the start of the week on Monday. Remember: periods in which Mars, Jupiter and/or Uranus are in aspect to one another tend to coincide with large price swings. We are in one of those periods now." Going from nearly 11,000 at the start of Monday down to 10,404 Tuesday, then closing that same day above 10,800 qualifies for a large price swing. By Friday, the DJIA was trading above 11,200 before settling back a bit on the close, consistent with Friday's lunar reversal set up.

Following the Mars-square-Jupiter lows of Tuesday, almost all of the stock indices around the world rallied sharply in Friday. Some markets, like the SMI index of Zurich, rallied to its highest level in two months. On the low of last Tuesday, there were numerous cases of intermarket bullish divergence in several regions. For example, in the Americas, the new yearly lows in the DJIA, S&P, NASDAQ Composite, and Merval of Argentina were not matched by new yearly lows in Brazil's Bovespa index. The later held above its low of August 9. In the Pacific Rim and Asia, the new low in the Hang Seng of Hong Kong was not matched by new lows in Japan, India, or Australia (China was closed all week). In Europe, last week's low did not take out the lows of September, let along August.

Crude Oil also fell in sympathy with stocks to a new cycle low last Tuesday, which makes even more sense because the Mars-Jupiter signature is more pertinent to Crude Oil than equity markets in the study of Financial Astrology. The Euro currency also fell on Tuesday, October 4, to its lowest level since January. Gold and Silver, on the other hand, also plummeted into another low on Tuesday, but both remained well above their lows of our September 26 three-star critical reversal date. It could have been the successful retest of those prior lows, but we need more time and/or more upside movement to confirm.

Short-Term Geocosmics

Now what? That's always the question, isn't it? Were the reversal and intermarket bullish signals of October 4 enough to confirm the end to the 5-month bear market? No, it's not enough yet, but it's a good start. This week's full moon could yield another important clue. As stated last week, "Another point to remember is that new and full moons when the Sun is in Libra can coincide with very important reversals. The high of the past week was on Tuesday, September 27, the exact day of the new moon. The full moon follows on October 11, just before the extremely volatile period of heliocentric Mercury transiting through Sagittarius takes place (October 15-27). And interestingly enough, that ends just as the super-volatile yearly opposition of the Sun and Jupiter takes place on October 28." We still await technical verification that the 15.5-month cycle low in USA stocks is in. If it is, then the market could move very sharply higher into the end of the month. If not, we still have another plunge ahead. But in either case, an important low is to be followed by a 10-20% rally, lasting 2-5 months. The only question for investors is: do you want to risk getting in too early, ahead of a possible 10% more to the downside, or get in too late, well after the bottom has already formed? Although that is the "only question," it is the same question that traders face every day before they enter a trade. It's the constant interplay for market participants between Saturn (fear) and Jupiter (greed). Last week and the rest of this month is all about Jupiter. And if Jupiter turns negative – if greed rules the emotions and the market heads down – it quickly turns to hysteria and panic. Of course, this becomes fear squared, which gets in to the subject of the forthcoming Uranus-Pluto square.

Longer-Term Thoughts

The extreme and increasing volatility in financial markets is symptomatic of (and a correlate to) an even bigger drama going on the heavens right now. This is known as the approaching square of Uranus and Pluto, a cosmic event that happens about every 126 years. It's quarter cycle phases are also very important. These two planets began their long-term cycle with the conjunction in 1965-66, when both planets were also in opposition to Saturn. This is the first quarter cycle of the new longer-term cycle. The previous quarter cycle occurred in 1931. You don't have to search your history books to figure out what happened in 1931 or 1965-66 to societies around the world, their economies and financial markets. Fundamental, structural changes on many levels of the human experience were enacted.

Now we are going through it again, as outlined in every Forecast Book since 1994. Each book stated that the period of 2008-2015 would be very much similar to 1928-1934. In many ways, it would also repeat the themes of the mid-1960's, since all quarter cycles relate to the dynamics that were underway at the time of the conjunction.

So let us consider for a moment what types of human activities were highlighted within two years of the conjunction between Uranus and Pluto that took place in 1965-1966 (say 1963-1968), with emphasis upon the parts of human activity that are ruled by these two planets according to the principles of the oldest known study to Man. Uranus rules the masses, the "world-view" if you will. It is the dynamic associated with changes - sudden changes - often involving the masses or large groups of people. Uranus is new, the future, and is said to have no regard for tradition and authority. It desires freedom, liberation, and equality for all. It is also the planet that is "disconnected" from others. It is an alien, a stranger, a non-conformist. It is revolutionary and rules youth movements. Uranus doesn't grow old, but it can become estranged.

Now let's consider Pluto, the planet of reformation. It looks at something and decides it is not right and sets about to correct it – by almost any means possible. Sometimes making something right means you have to tear it down first and then rebuilt it. Uranus is like a tornado or storm that comes suddenly out of nowhere. Pluto is like the storm that looms big in the distance and rolls in slowly. You know it is coming and there is little you can do to avoid it. You just bunker down and hope to survive its fury. Pluto rules debt, death and taxes. You know they are all coming and all you can do is make sure all your affairs are in order before they hit. Or, if you are intelligent enough, you actually make changes where possible and reverse the momentum by changing the actions that may have caused it in the first place before it is too late. Regarding debt, you either reverse your policies or you go bankrupt, or into default if you are a nation. The debt becomes so enormous that you can never get out from under it. All you can do is surrender, and promise to start over – or else give up your life and/or its freedoms.

So Uranus and Pluto pertain to the debt explosion we are now going through, and which this column identified long ago would likely happen from 2008-2015. But it is more than that. It also contains the seeds for revolution and social transformation on a huge global level, and especially for America, since the Uranus-Pluto makes a grand square to the USA's natal Sun-Saturn square.

The "Wall Street" protest movement now sweeping the country is a perfect example of Uranus (masses, young people) demanding fundamental changes in government, banks, and businesses. They haven't really defined their goals clearly, but it is not so difficult to see where this going, given the principles of astrology, especially Financial or Mundane Astrology. We had the same phenomenon arise in the mid 1960's. It started out as a peaceful "flower child" movement where the youth "turned, off, tuned, in and dropped out" in protest against the values of the previous generation – the one Tom Brokaw keeps referring to as "The Greatest Generation." That would a subject of great disagreement if you asked those Baby Boomers at that time (and maybe even today). But the 1960's 'peaceful revolution" soon turned violent when political activists entered that massive group movement and successfully steered it into an anti-war, anti-government movement. It soon evolved and expanded further into violent race riots. There were three hugely important assassinations that occurred during that period too: John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and Robert Kennedy. The movement was so powerful that it 1) caused the sitting president to drop out of the 1968 election, and 2) led to violent confrontations between police and demonstrators at the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago.

I bring this up because 2012-2015 will be the first quarter cycle of that Uranus-Pluto cycle that occurred in 1965-1966. The seeds that were planted in the mid-1960's are starting to blossom now (I am not sure "blossom" is the right word). The bottom line is that this period - now through 2015 really – can be humanity's finest moment, when it fundamentally changes the dynamics and policies that have led to this horrendous world-wide debt explosion. It can be humanity's finest moment if it can rise above the hatred of racial prejudices and social inequalities.

As I look at the race for the USA presidency in 2012, I am disturbed by these things as well as the Republican mantra that their most important duty is simply to defeat Barack Obama. Really? That's the most important duty of conservatives and Republicans? Let me suggest that they also consider the ramifications of simply defeating Barack Obama within the context of Uranus and Pluto in square aspect, as well as the ramifications if he wins with this type of prioritization of goals. If Barack Obama is re-elected in this type of hostile "mass consciousness" climate, the probability is great that 1) he will be impeached or 2) there will be an overthrow –revolution – of the government. If he is not elected, there will still be danger of an overthrow of the USA government, but it will likely be brought about by massive race riots. The same is true if he is elected and impeached. If the Republicans truly want to win the election AND avoid a race riot that could lead to tremendous social unrest, then they probably have only one choice for a candidate to run against Barack Obama: Herman Cain. Now, I am not endorsing Cain. I am just saying: if the Republicans who claim to be patriotic AND see their primary duty to defeat Barack Obama are sincere, and they don't want to see this country's foundation turned on its head (well, any more than it already has been turned on its head in the past 11 years), then they need to seriously look at their own African-American candidate Herman Cain (both December 13, 1945) and 9x9x9 tax program (taxes are also ruled by Pluto, and Uranus is change).

As historic as 2008 was because it resulted in the election of the first African-American president ever in the USA, the study of astrology suggests that the election of 2012 will be just as historic and important. But it is not the election itself that fascinates me so much. It is what happens as a result of it. Either humanity – and especially America - steps up and exhibit its finest moment ever and transform this hostile economic and social climate into something to be proud of, or else it sinks to its lowest level and falls into an abyss that is nothing short of tragic, both economically and socially.

Watch the protest movement on Wall Street. Watch who infiltrates this movement and tries to steer it into a political activist movement with the potential to unleash a very violent force. Maybe it becomes the left's own Tea Party movement. If Obama wants to be a hero and increase his approval ratings, perhaps he choose to send in the Marines or Army to stand between the New York police force and the protestors the moment the police start to turn violent. He can create the narrative whereby he protects the protestors' right to assemble and free speech (he is all about creating narratives before action) You think we live in interesting times? You haven't seen anything yet. It's about to ratchet up another notch. Let's hope our leaders step up and make this our genertation's finest moment. It is possible if they lead in that direction, rather than divisive and polarizing directions.

Each of these will also offer the English version of Forecast 2012, as will our Chinese distributor at We will start printing comments here from readers of last year's book. The first is ""As a professional financial advisor, the Forecasts Book allows me to lay out a framework for the coming year for all my account management. It's an invaluable tool." M. S. Santa FE, NM." "The Ultimate Book on Stock Market Timing, Volume 5: Price Objectives and Technical Analysis" is now out as of just two weeks ago! The comments and reviews are starting to come in , and we will post them here one at a time. Here is one of the first: ""Amazing! I love the book! It adds another dimension onto it all....and now I finally know what the TIP is and where it comes from." Stuart M, Trader, Newport, RI." This book took two years to write, which is par for each of the five books of this series that started in 1997. That was around the time I decided I wanted to "tap into the soul of the stock market," like there is such a thing. Turns out there is, in my opinion. But it depends on how you interpret "soul." If you accept that it is a connection between the observable and the intuitive, that patterns do exist and like oracles, they oftentimes do reveal the future, then it does exist. This is a book describing the tools that serious traders that I know use. I use them. Many of my subscribers use them, although not that many know how I calculate price targets to go along with market timing. This book identifies the formulas I personally use to calculate price targets, and the trading plans I find that work using these market timing and technical indicators. This book is packed with powerful tools (signals), and if you take the time to learn these tools properly, your chances of being a successful trader will increase tremendously, IMHO. The book is 300 pages, printed in perfect bind format, gloss cover, 8-1/2" x 11" size. The retail price of this new book is $144.00. If you are interested in this unique and integrated methodology for analyzing and forecasting stock indices, you can save big bucks by ordering all five volumes, or choice of any four now at, or just go to and scroll down to the announcement. If ordering all five volumes, you will save $99.00! For more information on this book, go to YouTube at, describing this new book. It is "the missing link." This weekly report is written with the intent to educate the reader on the relationship between astrological factors and collective human activities as they are happening. In this regard, this report will oftentimes report what happened in various stock and financial markets throughout the world in the past week, and discuss that movement in light of the geocosmic signatures that were in effect. It will then identify the geocosmic factors that will be in effect in the next week, or even month, or even years, and the author's understanding of how these signatures will likely affect human activity in the times to come. The author (Merriman) will do this from a perspective of a cycle's analyst looking at the military, political, economic, and even financial markets of the world.

It is possible that some forecasts will be made based on these factors. However, the primary goal is to both educate and alert the reader as to the psychological climate we are in, from an astrological perspective. The hope is that it will help the reader understand these psychological dynamics that underlie (or coincide with) the news events and hence financial markets of the day.
